 How to Apply for the UPSC Exam Step by Step – A Simple Guide for First-Timer


Heard about UPSC but not sure how to actually apply? You’re not alone. Every year, lakhs of aspirants get stuck in the application process—even before the real battle begins.

Whether you're dreaming of becoming an IAS, IPS, or IFS officer, the first step is correctly applying for the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE). Let’s walk you through the full process step-by-step, in plain English.

Step 1: Check the UPSC Notification

Visit: https://upsc.gov.in

Look for the latest notification under “What’s New” or Examinations > Active Examinations.

Read the full notification—it includes eligibility, exam dates, syllabus, vacancies, etc.

Note the start and end dates of the application window.

Step 2: Visit the UPSC Online Application Portal

Go to: https://upsconline.nic.in

Click on "Online Application for Various Examinations of UPSC".

Choose "Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination" from the list.

Step 3: Fill Part I Registration

This includes basic details like:

Name (as per your 10th certificate)

Date of birth

Gender

Email ID and mobile number

Address

Category (General/OBC/SC/ST/EWS)

Once filled:

Submit Part I, and you'll get a Registration ID.

Step 4: Fill Part II Registration

This part includes:

Uploading your Photo, Signature, and Photo ID Proof

> Format: JPG/JPEG only | Size: 20 KB – 300 KB

Selecting your preferred exam center

> Choose wisely, centers get filled quickly.

Payment of Exam Fee:

₹100 for General/OBC (Free for SC/ST/Female/PwBD)

Pay via Net Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card, or SBI Challan

> 🔐 Keep a soft copy of the final confirmation page and fee receipt.

 Step 5: Final Confirmation

After completing both parts, download the application confirmation.

You’ll receive a confirmation on your registered email & SMS.
